Back Home, when I Had not Had Enough Fun Yet…

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Back home,
From the land Whose name means "Chilli Pepper"
Where Traffic lights and lane markings a
re nothing more than decorations
Where horses and their carts ruled the roads
Where most people toiled hard, sweat and blood for a living
But with smiles on their faces and beaming with pride
When their handiwork is being admired

OK, bad idea to try to be poetic… Don’t know how to continue that. Anyway more about the place:

The mountains were tall and majestic. In fact Mount Rinjani, the mountain which we climbed, is actually the second tallest in Indonesia, and rated the third hardest mountain to climb in the world (we were told only on the second day of our climb), much harder than Kota Kinabalu, according to our guide and porters. Should have known better when I was told it takes 4D3N to get to the top and back for a mountain that is almost 3,800m high. So I am not ashamed to say that we didn’t manage to succeed for the final 3-hour ascent from the camp to the summit, because it really was too tough and dangerous.

Haha don’t feel like saying more. Maybe a picture really says a thousand words. Shall upload some pictures now. The beaches there were really cantik. Unfortunately my photography skills are still not good enough to convey that accurately. Nevertheless you may take a look at the pictures, and maybe with a sense of imagination you can absorb the beauty of this island which is about ten times the size of Singapore. Enjoy!   :)

  • Laopos Hehe start off with thanking Sahira and Simeon for your comments in my previous posts… Sorry I hadn’t replied!

Anyway, finally got my camera! That’s the picture of my da lao po playing around with my xiao lao po… Keke, harmonious co-existence…

And the reason I had been kinda busy the past few days was because I was trying to get used to the camera, and also checking out the more complicated stuff in the instruction manual.So sorry if anyone has been ignored etc. Anyway I had done some experimenting with the camera and taking pictures of my bedroom + view from my room. Comments, tips or pointers are most welcome! Please check out the pictures from the photo album.

Hehe shall go upload the pictures now. Anyway, I would really appreciate pointers and comments on the pictures k? I’m still trying to learn more skills. Thanks!

Defeated by the Clock

Ipptresult Sienz ah, couldn’t get more government money… Went to Maju Camp to take IPPt with the aim of getting Silver, or rather the accompanying $200 incentive, as a form of rebate for the GST I have been paying to the government. However missed out on the Silver timing for the 2.4km run. Missed by 16 seconds, which really was far from what I expected… Should I try again before my birthday? Maybe I should train somemore and see of I can shave off that 16 seconds before I make up my mind whether to make another attempt.

Anyway more of the Mars vs Venus; War of the Worlds stuff… Was out with one of my bestest friends in school on Wednesday, let’s call her Ms Y. On our way to meeting up with the rest of our kakis, we passed by the SMU building at Bras Basah. The ensuing conversation:

Ms Y: The roof looks ugly. Glass panels everywhere for the walls, then red tiles on the roof… Distasteful!
Me: Oh well, this is not a school for Architecture. Anyway who cares about the roof?
Ms Y: Cannot! It just looks ugly! So out of place! They should also have glass panels for the roof to complete the look!
Me: Glass panels on the roof will heat up the whole place mah! Then it will feel very warm in the building.
Ms Y: At least it won’t look so ugly… Turn up the aircon lor! If not they should just use other colours instead of red lah! So ugly!
Me: Aiyah it’s just a roof…
Ms Y: Lucky I’m not in this school… I should also tell our friend, Ms O, not to come here for exchange. The roof is so ugly!
Me: Don’t come just because the roof is ugly?
Ms Y: Ya lah! So ugly!
                                      ……..

Shall not comment further. Anyway, some cool stuff we saw at Plaza Singapura that day:

MEN are from Mars, WOMEN are from Venus. How did they end up on Earth?

THEY needed to buy a backpack for a mountain-climbing trip in 3 weeks’ time. So off they went shopping together for the new backpack that they would bring along on the trip.

HE was looking for something big enough to fit in the gear they needed on the 4D3N trip. Also it had to be comfortable as they were going to be on the move much of the time during the trip. Aches, sores and blisters on the back or shoulder could spoil the trip if the backpack did not sit comfortably on the body.

SHE however, had other ideas. She preferred something that looked good, and was small. She wanted the backpack to be "small and cute". Big and bulky ones or those that did not pass the looks test were a definite no. She never wanted to be caught with an unattractive-looking or un-ladylike backpack, even in the mountains. It was OK even if there was insufficient space in the bag- at most they would bring along less things during the climb. The priority here was the appearance. Functionality, comfort and convenience were secondary considerations.

IN THE END they both got frustrated at each other and the purchase was not made.

~~~
So, whose fault was it that they both got kind of pissed with each other? Well to me I think that nobody was really at fault. It is just the difference in the way that men and women go about doing things. There are exceptions, of course, but I would say that in general, men tend to think with their brains while women, with their hearts. This has been evident since the beginning of time, or at least since the beginning of our modern times:
1) Women wear skirts and men wear trousers.
2) Women wear heels and men wear flat soles.
These are the first signs that women give more consideration to how they look rather than how they function, even at the expense of inconveniencing themselves. More "contemporary" examples:
3) Women buy iPods and men buy Creatives or Samsungs.
4) Women buy Sony cameras and men prefer Canon, Panasonic or Nikon.
5) Women drive Beetles and men go for Minis.
6) Women like Beckham and men like Ronaldinho.
***Note: Women here can also denote men who think like women.
Oh wells, what to do? That’s how were were made when we were born. Like it or not we have to accept this fact and live with it. Maybe that is why in all long term heterosexual relationships, they are actually love-hate relationships. Just wondering though, how did men get accused of being concerned about looks, unlike the women who go for inner beauty?
On a separate note, the TODAY paper was telling us to prepare for a fee hike. Those people who voted for PAP in the GE had better shut up and not complain, because you people were the ones who made it happen!
On another side note, the writer is also wondering why is it that in the run-up to the elections and the bus service 922 was introduced in Bukit Panjang, the media made such a big deal out of it, lavishing credit on the incumbent MP who worked so hard to make a new bus route possible for the residents of Bukit Panjang. However now that the dust has almost settled on the elections, route 921 has been removed to put things back at square one for the residents of Bukit Panjang. The media however feels that this removal is not worth even a mention. Maybe 5 years later the MP might decide to re-instate service 921 and try to claim credit again…
